Phone number validation, before the next step.
A phone number validation API checks input against numbering-plan rules and returns consistent phone number formats. QuietPass includes E.164, national, and international formatting with numbering-plan validation at no charge. It does not establish who owns a number or whether a call or SMS will reach it.
What does E.164 formatting do?
E.164 gives an international number a consistent form: a leading plus sign, a country calling code, and the national number. QuietPass’s API accepts an international number or national input with a two-letter default_country. Use the returned number.e164 for a consistent representation and the national or international forms for display.
A country calling code and a mobile prefix have different jobs. For New Zealand, the international calling code is +64. Pass default_country: "NZ" when processing local input rather than assuming that every number belongs to the same market.
Possible, valid, and verified are different
- Possible
- The number has a plausible length under numbering-plan metadata.
- Valid
- The number also matches a recognized numbering range. Metadata can change, and this does not establish that the number is assigned.
- Verified
- A separate verification flow has confirmed access to the number at that time. A validation result alone cannot do this.
Request formatting and validation only
Send an empty checks array. Formatting is always included, so no network intelligence check is needed for this request.
POST /v1/phone/check
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_SERVER_API_KEY
Content-Type: application/json
{
"phone": "YOUR_VERIFIED_NUMBER",
"checks": []
}For national input, add "default_country": "NZ" or the appropriate country. Use your own SMS-verified number during pre-live access. The quickstart explains authentication and current onboarding limits.
Where it fits in your application
Normalize input at signup, keep a consistent number representation in your contact records, and show a useful correction when input fails numbering rules. Add line type or current carrier only when your application needs those answers. A valid result should never be treated as a promise of deliverability.
